4 Treatments for Asthma That You Can Do At Home

Although you can not treat the symptoms of asthma during relapse, the following ingredients can help control your asthma and make it less frequent to relapse. But do not forget, consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment as well.



1. Lemon

People with asthma often have low levels of vitamin C. Lemons fruit contains rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that will reduce asthma symptoms. Try to squeeze half a lemon in a glass of water and add sugar to your taste. Then, drink regularly to reduce asthma attacks. Some other fruits such as oranges, blueberries, papaya, and strawberries also contain rich in nutrients that can help to minimize asthma symptoms.

Note: avoid bottled lemon juice. Do not eat citrus fruits during an asthma attack if it worsens symptoms.

2. Mustard oil

When you are experiencing an asthma attack, just massage using mustard oil that can help relieve respiratory tract and restore normal breathing.

  • Heat the mustard oil with a little camphor.
  • Pour into the bowl and when it is warm, gently rub on the chest and upper back, then massage.
  • Do it several times a day until symptoms are reduced.

3. Eucalyptus oil

Pure eucalyptus oil can be used as an effective treatment for asthma symptoms of decongestant contents. Research states that this oil has a eucalyptol substance that can shed mucus.

  • Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a paper towel and place it near your head while sleeping so you can smell the aroma.
  • You can also add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus oil to a pan of boiling water and inhale the steam. Try a deep breath for faster results.

4. Carom seeds

Carom seeds, also well-known as Bishop's weed or ajwain, can also be used to treat mild asthma, due to carom seeds act as bronchodilators by dilating the bronchial tubes in the lungs.

  • Boil 1 teaspoon of carom seeds in water and then inhale the steam, as necessary. You can also drink it.
  • Alternatively, heat a handful of carom seeds wrapped in cotton cloth in the microwave for a few seconds. When the heat is fitting, place it on your chest and neck until the heat is gone. Repeat every day until you are satisfied with the results.
  • Another option is to heat paste carom seeds and jaggery, then eat 1-2 to 2 teaspoons a day for several days or until your asthma improves. This treatment is not recommended for people with diabetes.

Additional tips


  • Try to identify the triggers of asthma and avoid it. Avoid air pollutants, allergens, irritants,, as well as respiratory infections.
  • Consumption of herbs and spices such as rosemary, sage, oregano, ginger and turmeric on cooking.
  • Eat at least 2 servings of fish such as salmon, cod, mackerel and herring in a week. You can also take omega-3 supplements after consultation with your doctor.
  • Consumption of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Nutrients such as magnesium, selenium beta-carotene, and vitamins C and E can improve lung function.
  • Avoid processed foods with additives and artificial preservatives. These chemicals can trigger asthma attacks.
  • Limit your intake of milk and dairy products if you are allergic to milk protein or have lactose intolerance due to lactase deficiency. People who are free of this problem, can consume milk, because fat from milk tends to have a protective effect on asthma symptoms.
