1. Breathing exercises
There is a wealth of research that points to the health benefits of deep breathing exercises as a proper way of relieving stress. The oxygen that enters replaces the carbon dioxide that comes out when we breathe deeply brings a myriad of benefits to the body system. Controlling breathing is reported to slow down the heart rate and lower or stabilize blood pressure. This has been linked to lower stress levels.
The way: Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lie down. Afterward, try to breathe normally as usual and place your hands on your stomach. Then inhale slowly through your nose, letting your chest and lower abdomen expand until you feel your hands rising as well. Let your stomach expand until it reaches its maximum capacity. Hold your breath for a few minutes, and then exhale slowly through your mouth (or through your nose if this is more comfortable). You should also feel your hands slowly dropping as well. Repeat for a few minutes.
By controlling your breathing, you can focus your thoughts on slow, deep breathing, which helps you to release yourself from stressful thoughts and sensations. Deep breathing calms the nerves in the brain. This is another reason why taking deep breaths can be such a powerful way to deal with stress.
2. Meditation
Meditation is a method of relaxation that has been trusted for centuries to make a person feel more relaxed and refreshed. Its benefits as an effective way of relieving stress have been proven by many scientific studies.
True meditation is not emptying the mind, but rather focusing the mind on the breathing exercise as above. During meditation you should also calculate the breathing interval, when to inhale, when to hold your breath, and when to exhale. You can also adjust how long you meditate, for example, five to ten minutes, until the body and mind relax on their own.
The key to this meditation is ‘thinking nothing’, just focus on that moment of meditation. You can start by sitting cross-legged. Place your left hand on top of your right, with your palm facing the sky. Make an oval shape with the thumbs touching each other.
Next, follow the breathing technique steps as in point 1 above, clearing the mind. Focus your mind to imagine positive things that make you calm and happy. When you find yourself again thinking about something stressful, try to get back to concentrating. Keep meditating until you feel relaxed.
3. Laughter
Laughter is a natural way of relieving stress. The reason is, laughing is beneficial for releasing tension in the body and making your mind bigger plong.
Laughter can reduce the release of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, two stress hormones, and replace them with endorphins that make you happy. Laughter can also train the diaphragm, abdominal contractions to the shoulders. After doing this, you will feel the areas tense up and then become more relaxed.
You can take the time to watch funny movies, read humorous stories, or hang out with friends who can always make you smile or even laugh.
