Suicide is one serious case that is often overlooked. Either because it is considered something too extreme, or because not many people know someone who has committed suicide. In fact, the suicide rate in Indonesia cannot be said to be trivial.
During 2005 alone there were 30,000 suicides recorded in Indonesia, and these are only reported ones. There have been many cases of suicide that have been covered up, either because of the shame of the family, or to protect the honor of the deceased.
Often times, someone who has suicidal intentions already shows some signs and symptoms that can be observed by those closest to him. Unfortunately, many people ignore this with the excuse that ‘maybe just temporarily upset’, or belittling it with the thought ‘he couldn’t possibly kill himself’, until it’s too late. This condition is exacerbated by the perception that people in Indonesia consider depression as a normal thing, and are considered the same as ordinary stress. In fact, not only stress is temporary and not too serious, depression has been categorized as a mental health disorder, and if left untreated, it often leads to suicide attempts.
