The larynx is located in the throat at the top of the trachea or throat, like a hollow tube about 5 cm high. The larynx is responsible for producing sound. When you breathe in, the vocal cords relax against the wall of the larynx and actually open up to allow air to enter and exit the lungs.
When you speak, the vocal cords lie close together and stretch across the larynx. The air from the lungs is then forced out between vocal cords, causing it to vibrate and produce a tone of voice. Now, because the male larynx will grow bigger at puberty, the vocal cords will grow longer and thicker. Also the facial bones will start to grow.
The cavities inside the sinuses, nose and the back of the throat also grow larger, creating more space in the face which leaves the sound more room for echo. All of these factors are the reason why the voice changes during puberty in boys.
This change in voice in pubescent boys can be explained by imagining a guitar. When the thin strings are plucked, the vibrations will produce a high note. Whereas when the thick strings are plucked, they sound much deeper when they vibrate. That’s a picture of what happens to the male adolescent voice.
Before experiencing growth, the male larynx is relatively small and the vocal cords are relatively thin. So the boy’s voice will be high. However, as the bones, cartilage, and vocal cords grow, the voice will begin to sound like an adult.
