Chlortalidone is a drug that is categorized in a group of drugs thiazide diuretics. Thiazide diuretics work to reduce water levels in your body by increasing the amount of water in your urine. Chlortalidone is a medicine which is also called a “water tablet”.

Chlortalidone is a drug used to:

  • treating high blood pressure ( hypertension)
  • treat heart failure
  • reduce fluid retention that causes kidney and liver disease
  • treat diabetes insipidus (a condition in which a person has too much urine volume and is often thirsty).

How do I use Chlortalidone?

Chlortalidone is a medicine that is best used in the morning with a meal. Swallow the tablet by drinking a glass of water. You should avoid foods with a low salt content because chlortalidone can reduce the amount of salt in your body. If you are on a diet containing a small amount of salt, tell your doctor before using Chlortalidone.

How do I save Chlortalidone?

Chlortalidone is this drug is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don’t keep it in the bathroom. Don’t freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

What is the dose of chlortalidone for adults?

Starting with an initial dose of 25 mg (half a tablet) a day. Your doctor may increase the dose to 50 mg (one tablet) per day if needed.

Starting with an initial dose of 25 mg (half a tablet) a day. Your doctor may increase your dose to 200 mg (4 tablets) a day if needed.

Fluid retention associated with kidney or liver disease: up to 50 mg (1 tablet) daily.

The initial dose is 100 mg (2 tablets) twice a day. Your doctor will likely reduce your dose to 50 mg (1 tablet) a day.

  • Elderly patients with kidney problems:

Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of medication because your body may not be able to take Chlortalidone as quickly as your normal body.

If you are not sure how many tablets you should use, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop using the drug suddenly. Ask your doctor first.

Chlortalidone side effects

What side effects can be experienced due to chlortalidone?

Chlortalidone is a drug that can cause side effects. Very common side effects (affects more than 1 in 10 people):

  • low potassium content in the blood which can cause muscle weakness, muscle twitching, or an abnormal heartbeat
  • increased uric acid content in the blood
  • increased levels of cholesterol in the blood

Common side effects (less than 1 person in 10):

  • low sodium levels which can cause fatigue, confusion, muscle twitching, coma
  • low levels of magnesium in the blood
  • high levels of sugar in the blood which can cause fatigue, weakness or feeling thirsty.
  • itchy rash
  • rash on the skin
  • low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy when you stand up
  • dizzy
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach feels bad
  • impotent for men

Unusual side effects (affects 1 in 100 people)

  • gout which can cause pain and swelling of the vertebrae.

Rare side effects (affect less than 1 in 1000 people):

  • an increase in the amount of calcium in the blood which can cause restlessness, eye pain, and abdominal pain
  • there is sugar in the urine (this can only be determined when the doctor or nurse tests your urine)
  • worsening of diabetes
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin due to liver or blood problems
  • your skin is sensitive to the sun
  • abnormal heart rate including palpitations and fainting
  • headache
  • feeling sick
  • stomach ache
  • bowel obstruction
  • diarrhea
  • lack of platelets in the blood which can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding
  • a decrease in the number of white blood cells that can lead to infection
  • high numbers of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • breathing problems
  • problems with the kidneys

Not everyone experiences this side effect. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Chlortalidone Drug Warnings and Cautions

What should be known before using chlortalidone?

Chlortalidone is a drug that can react to certain conditions. Do not use chlortalidone if:

  • You are allergic to chlortalidone, sulphonamides such as sulfamethoxazole or anything with a Chlortalidone composition (see section 6 for more information)
  • if you don’t pee at all
  • if you have acute kidney or liver problems
  • if the potassium level in your blood is low which can cause muscle weakness, muscle twitching, or an abnormal heartbeat
  • if the sodium content in your blood is low it can cause fatigue, confusion, muscle twitching, coma
  • if you have a high calcium content in your blood, causing you to lose your appetite, feel tired, or feel weak muscles
  • if you think you have gout or kidney stones
  • if you have Addison’s disease (a condition in which the adrenal glands can’t produce enough steroids)

Make sure you tell your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of the above or you think you have.

Is Chlortalidone safe for pregnant and lactating women?

There is not yet sufficient information about the safety of using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication.

Chlortalidone Drug Interactions

What medicines can interact with Chlortalidone?

Although some drugs should not be taken at the same time, in other cases some drugs can also be used together even though interactions may occur. In such cases, the doctor may change the dose, or take other preventive measures as needed. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other over-the-counter or prescription drugs.

Can Chlortalidone interact with food or alcohol?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.

Does Chlortalidone interact with certain health conditions?

Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:

  • You have liver or kidney disease
  • if you are on a low salt diet
  • if you have diabetes mellitus (increased blood sugar)
  • if you have high cholesterol content
  • if you have recently received anesthesia

Chlortalidone overdose

What should I do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (112) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don’t double the dose.
