Do not just choose, these are 3 types of mouthwash according to their function

Mouthwash sold in the market generally aims to help reduce bad breath odor. However, did you know that there are various mouthwashes that offer different functions and substances? Yes, drg. Michelle Henshaw, MPH from Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine said that there are three different types of mouthwash that are made to treat different oral and dental problems. What are the types and which do you need? Check the answer here!

Choosing the best type of mouthwash, according to the condition of your mouth

1. Mouthwash that contains fluoride

Fluoride is a substance that can help prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel. Enamel is a white substance in the bones of teeth. Generally, people rarely use mouthwash that contains fluoride. The reason is, fluoride has been widely marketed and can be obtained from toothpaste which is commonly used for everyday life.

However, according to drg. Michelle Henshaw there are a few exceptions where mouthwash containing fluoride is needed by people with certain oral conditions. An example is people with xerostomia (abnormally dry mouth) may need to use this type of mouthwash.

The reason is, people with dry mouth conditions are prone to experiencing caries or cavities. These cavities are caused because dry mouth triggers a change in the balance of bacteria in your mouth. The more bad bacteria in the mouth, the higher the risk of tooth decay occurring. Therefore, people with dry mouth need mouthwash that contains fluoride to help treat tooth decay.

2. Mouthwash to make fresh breath

The average mouthwash sold in the market is formulated to make the breath smell fresher and more fragrant. However, you have to be careful. Mouthwash in general does not always offer long-term benefits for oral health.

Drg. Michelle Henshaw said that gargling with mouthwash that contains fragrances can indeed kill bacteria in the mouth in no time. However, this will not bring health to your teeth and mouth in the future. This is because basically the bacteria that were removed with mouthwash will reappear. So, you need to use mouthwash several times a day because the properties do not last long.

However, for people who need instant breath fresheners, there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of the benefits of this type of mouthwash.

3. Anti-plaque mouthwash for gingivitis

The third type of mouthwash is medicine that contains anti-plaque substances on the teeth. This oral cleaning fluid contains substances that can kill bacteria that cause plaque on teeth. However, drg. Michelle Hanshew still recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and do flossing (floss) after you eat.

If you have gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), fluids that contain anti-plaque substances can help keep your gums and teeth from getting worse. If you have a different oral health condition, your dentist will prescribe a special mouthwash according to your individual needs.
